Transitioning into Security Risk Management

1. HR: At GSX, you talked about transitioning from law enforcement, or the military into corporate/commercial security. What advice can you offer people considering the same change of direction?
SL: It will not be an easy journey but with time, patience and the willingness to adapt it is a generous one. You cannot expect to walk into the sector and be at the same level, or equivalent to that which you have just left.
2. HR: A considerable number of security professionals have law enforcement and/or military backgrounds. How do you think the military prepares you for handling corporate security matters?
SL: It allows for you to be calm under pressure and also not be too worried about making some decisions that can be difficult at times. Also, I believe that it can help you to be more fluid with the movement within the sector.
3. HR: Did you face any systematic challenges when converting from a military, or law enforcement background into a corporate environment? If so do you have any tips for overcoming them?
SL: I realised that I cannot be the person of authority anymore and that I cannot expect co-workers to respect me or my job title like in the military.
Thank you Stephen for taking the time to share your experience and views with us.
